New BayHawks Coach Greets Media at LECOM Medical Fitness & Wellness Center

New Erie BayHawks coach Jay Larranaga met with members of the local media Monday at the LECOM John M. & Silvia Ferretti Medical Fitness & Wellness Center. It was a chance for local sports reporters to interview Coach Larranaga one-on-one and learn about his plans for the BayHawks team, which begins training camp at the LECOM Wellness Center next month.

Larranaga, who spent 12 years playing professional basketball in Europe, most recently worked as an assistant coach at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. He takes over the coaching reins from John Treloar, who is now Director of Player Personnel for the Phoenix Suns.

Coach Larranaga was joined by his assistant coach Ben McDonald, BayHawks President Matt Bresee, majority owner Steve Demetriou, lead local investor Owen McCormick, and David Griffin, Vice President of Basketball Operations for the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The team officials said they were impressed with the LECOM Wellness Center and look forward to holding training camp at the facility. In addition to meeting with the Erie media, Larranaga also had the opportunity to talk to some of the LECOM doctors who will serve as team physicians.

The BayHawks will have training camp workouts and regular practices at the Wellness Center throughout the season. Team practices are open to all LECOM Wellness Center members and LECOM students. BayHawks President Matt Bresee said the Wellness Center is a perfect place for the team to practice. “The state-of-the-art facilities and amenities rival what many NBA teams have and it’s exactly the type of environment we want our players in,” Bresee said.

LECOM is the major team sponsor of the Erie BayHawks. The BayHawks are the NBA Development League affiliate of the Cleveland Cavaliers and Toronto Raptors. The BayHawks kick off the 2010-2011 season at home on November 19th.
