The Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine has received approval for a $12,000 annual endowment from the Colby Foundation which will be used to offer an annual lecture series that educates LECOM medical students and the public about organ and tissue donation.
Each of LECOM’s three locations – in Erie, Pa., Bradenton, Fla., and Greensburg, Pa. – will receive $4,000 annually. According to the foundation, participating schools commit to a minimum of a half day seminar or event that provides organ and tissue donation information to medical students. The foundation prefers these events occur at least once in the medical student’s academic years and once in their clinical years.
The Colby Foundation is a private, non-profit organization established in 1995 by John and Starla Cassani after the death of their son, Colby. While still grieving, they found a measure of hope and healing through donating his organs. In 1995, they started the Colby Foundation to honor his memory and to educate others about organ and tissue donation.
