Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine faculty member Richard Chegwidden, Ph.D., F.R.S.C., Director of the Problem-Based Learning Pathway of the College of Osteopathic Medicine and Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, has been invited to lecture at the first International Conference on Drug Design and Discovery from Feb. 4-7, 2008, in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Dr. Chegwidden will lecture at the conference, which will feature the participation of 15 Nobel Laureates.

Dr. Chegwidden will present a lecture titled “The Carbonic Anhydrases: Potential Therapeutic Targets in Renal Carcinoma.” The author of numerous research papers in medical enzymology, gene technology, cancer research and medical education, he edits one of the major research volumes in his field, “The Carbonic Anhydrases: New Horizons.”
Renal cancer commonly remains undetected until it has become widespread, and tends to be somewhat unresponsive to current forms of chemotherapy. Consequently the development of a new form of treatment would be particularly valuable. Dr. Chegwidden has shown that highly specific inhibitors of the enzyme carbonic anhydrase also inhibit the growth and invasive properties of human renal cancer cells in culture, and the growth of human renal tumors implanted into animal models. A specific form of this enzyme is present in renal cancer cells, especially in cases with the worst prognosis, but not in normal kidney, nor in benign tumors. Carbonic anhydrase inhibitors have been used in the past for treatment of other disorders, and are known to have minimal side effects.
On the International Conference on Drug Design and Discovery’s official Web site, Richard Ernst, Nobel Laureate and Chairman of the conference’s organizing committee, said the conference “will host leading scientists and Nobel Laureates from academia and industry worldwide, to discuss the latest developments in drug design and discovery. The conference aims to provide many interesting perspectives on how the science and technology of drug discovery is changing and will continue to change in the modern era.”
Dr. Chegwidden organized and chaired three international research conferences, acted as session chair at 18 conferences, and has been invited to speak at 35 conferences in 18 countries. He has been on international advisory committees for research conferences in Oxford, England; San Antonio, Texas; Beijing and Shanghai, China; Stockholm, Sweden; and Berlin, Germany. The Dubai conference will be his first visit to the Middle East.
