LECOM Sports Medicine funds athletic training scholarship at Mercyhurst College

The Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine presented a $7,500 check to the Mercyhurst College Athletic Department for the Athletic Training Graduate Assistant Program. As part LECOM’s commitment to improving sports performance and injury prevention, LECOM Sports Medicine has partnered as team physicians for Mercyhurst College athletic teams and as faculty for sports medicine courses.

LECOM Sports Medicine Director Patrick F. Leary, D.O., presented the scholarship donation to Mercyhurst Athletic Director Joe Kimball and Head Athletic Trainer Mary Ann Love prior to the March 26 Erie BayHawks game. This is the first of a five year commitment which will provide scholarship funds for the LECOM- Mercyhurst Athletic Training Graduate Assistant Program. LECOM is presenting sponsor of the Erie BayHawks NBA Development League team.

In 2009, Mercyhurst and LECOM formed a partnership that created new educational and health care opportunities for both institutions while fostering their collaboration on a variety of research projects. This agreement brings LECOM physicians to the Mercyhurst campus to provide clinical care for all students, team physicians for the ‘Hurst athletic department, and medical education and clinical experiences for students in Mercyhurst’s Department of Sportsmedicine.

LECOM physicians deliver medical education and clinical experiences for sports medicine students, specifically teaching a course called “Medical Education Laboratory II” and serving as guest lecturers throughout the academic year. As part of the agreement, athletic training majors, pre-physical therapy students as well as pre-med and health-fitness promotion students observe and shadow health specialists at the LECOM Medical Fitness & Wellness Center and its affiliated Millcreek Community Hospital. Through Medical Associates of Erie the College provides physician services for the college’s Cohen Student Health Center.
