The Erie community filled the Great Hall of the Bayfront Convention Center where LECOM held its 18th annual scholarship auction and dinner. Nearly 900 guests were in attendance bidding on 600 items in both a silent and a live auction. Items ranged from household goods, artwork, and sports memorabilia to vacations, sporting event tickets and even a private Lake Erie sunset cruise.
"The purpose is to raise dollars for the scholarship fund for students to help with their debt. But more importantly it allows LECOM to showcase itself to the community” said LECOM President John M. Ferretti, D.O.
The auction attracts community leaders, LECOM alumni and businesses who view LECOM as a major community asset.
Among the guests was former Pittsburgh Steeler cornerback Dwayne Woodruff. Known as one of the toughest defensive players in the NFL, Woodruff is now Judge Woodruff, a member of the Juvenile Court Judges Commission in Allegheny County. The judge signed autographs for delighted fans and got the crowd ready for the live auction by relating tales of the Superbowl XIV championship won by the Steelers. Judge Woodruff was a guest of Karl Falk, DO, a LECOM faculty member and Judge Stephanie Domitrovich from the Erie County court.
All proceeds from the auction benefited the LECOM Scholarship Fund and all items available to bid on were donated from individuals and businesses. While contributions continue to be tabulated, the auction is close to reaching $900,000.
“This was the largest participation in the history of the auction, which I feel demonstrates the degree of impact LECOM has on the community. It’s such an overwhelming response to helping us in regards to student scholarships” said Dr. Ferretti.
This auction was the culmination of all the scholarship fundraising efforts LECOM holds throughout the year between the Erie, Pa., Bradenton, Fl., and Seton Hill in Greensburg, Pa. campuses.
