First-year and second-year medical students from the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine-Bradenton warned elementary and middle school students about the dangers of tobacco.
LECOM assisted with tobacco prevention “Day of Service” on April 14 and 25 at four elementary schools, three middle schools and one private school in Manatee and Sarasota counties.
Over 950 students received the anti-tobacco message. The A.T.T.A.C (Area Health Education Center Tobacco Training and Cessation) program’s message: Promoting healthy choices and avoiding the dangers of tobacco. Teams of 4-5 students delivered a 35-40 minute anti-tobacco lesson, using approved interactive teaching methods.
Since 2005, GSAHEC has conducted tobacco cessation and prevention programs with health profession students. From 2006-2008, student participants have served as positive role models for over 7,000 school-aged children in Manatee and Sarasota counties.
