LECOM Bradenton Students Participate in Operation Prom

Members of the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine-Bradenton Emergency Room Club (ERC) gave high school students a sobering reminder about the dangers of drinking and driving.

On May 8, two wrecked vehicles were hauled onto the football field at Braden River High School. LECOM ERC students played the role of motorists who had just been severely injured in an alcohol-related accident.

Operation Prom
LECOM Bradenton students Emily Lipsky and Matt Jackson re-enact a DUI-related crash scene.

Staff members from the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office, Braden River Fire Department, EMS and BayFlite’s helicopter team recreated the roles they would perform as if they were actually responding to an accident.

The event was coordinated with Manatee County’s emergency service agencies, Braden River High School and Mother’s Against Drunk Driving (MADD).

High school students watched intently from the stands as the scene played out. LECOM students wearing bloody makeup and tattered clothing were positioned in and outside the wrecked cars. One of the actors was pronounced “dead” at the scene.

The dialog from a 911 call reporting an auto accident was broadcast over the stadium’s public-address system.

Members of the participating emergency services agencies drove onto the field in their vehicles to re-create the procedures in extracting the "victims" from the wreck, rushing them to the hospital and investigating the accident.

A deputy from the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office did a field sobriety test on the offending driver, who was taken away in handcuffs. The BayFlite helicopter landed at midfield and flew two of the student-actors out of the stadium.

Participating from LECOM-Bradenton were: Elysia Mallon, Andrew Morris, Emily Lipsky, Matt Jackson, Matt Jordan, Ryan Rambaran, Nick Kotch, Sarah Sheldon, Mary Arbuthnot and Ashley Grant.
